Technical Reference : Marine CO2 Regulations

When designing carbon dioxide systems for the marine market these codes and standards are the most utilized and referenced. A lot of the information and requirements found in these documents is repeated from one standard to the next. For publicly available documents, the actual document referenced is supplied. For other publications that may not be copied free of charge, a summary of the important information contained in the document is supplied. Click on the title to view each document.

Code/Standard

Information Covered

NFPA 12 Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems Chapter 6
(38 KB)

Chapter 6 of the National Fire Protection Association 12 provides guidance when designing, installing, testing, inspecting or maintaining carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems.

Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC) 6-72 – Guide to Fixed Fire-Fighting Equipment Aboard Merchant Vessels
(122 KB)

The purpose of the NVIC 6-72 circular primarily focuses on the design, installation, and testing of fixed carbon dioxide suppression systems aboard vessels. The type of vessel and application being protected requires special attention when designing a carbon dioxide system. NVIC 6-72 provides the proper design for various vessels and the appropriate CO2 flooding factor for the different applications found in the offshore market.

46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 95.15 – Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems, Details
(6,184 KB)

This regulation provides guidelines for design, piping requirements, control equipment, and cylinder storage for carbon dioxide extinguishing systems aboard fishing vessels, tugboats, and small passenger vessels.

46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 76.15 – Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems, Details
(2,654 KB)

This regulation provides guidelines for designing systems, system piping requirements, control equipment, and cylinder storage for carbon dioxide extinguishing systems aboard cargo ships and large passenger vessels.

46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 181.410 – Fixed Gas Fire Extinguishing Systems
(77 KB)

This document outlines the guidelines for system design, layout, and specific piping requirements for carbon dioxide extinguishing systems.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter II, Regulation 5 – Fixed Gas Fire-Extinguishing Systems
(31 KB)

This document outlines the requirements for the design and installation of fixed gas fire-extinguishing systems. Section 1 of this document provides general requirements, but section 2 provides specific requirements for carbon dioxide extinguishing systems.

46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Fire Extinguishing Systems – Subchapter T, Per 46 CFR 181.115
(767 KB)

This is a form for submittal to the Marine Safety Center to obtain approval on the engineered fixed gas fire extinguishing system. The form provides a list of items that are required to gain the local MSC approval.

Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular – Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishing System Safety
(52 KB)

The United States Coast Guard created this circular which provides safety precautions when testing and inspecting shipboard carbon dioxide extinguishing systems. This document is intended as a safety alert to inspectors, installers, ship owners, and operators. This is not a regulation, but is intended for guidance to assure life safety and prevent inadvertent discharge of carbon dioxide.
