Work Environment

Gulf Wide Safety Systems, LLC (GWSS) is seeking marine/offshore field service technicians and land based industrial/commercial alarm and sprinkler technicians. Field service representatives must work in the field for at least one (1) year before applying for a design, engineering, estimate, or service managers position. GWSS promotes, encourages and supports NICET and state license requirements for both office and field personnel. GWSS has proven that we can compete with anyone on price and especially engineering, design and quality of work.

GWSS was founded as primarily an offshore fire protection service for the offshore drilling and shipping industry. GWSS is "America's # 1 offshore drilling fire protection company". We provide our marine fire and safety inspection and testing services to 80% of the United States offshore drilling industry.

GWSS has always been a licensed for sprinkler systems contractor. GWSS did not aggressively peruse this market until last year. GWSS purchased a sprinkler company in order to gain more presence and therefore gain a larger market share. Our land/industrial division is steadily growing and new accounts are added each month. Our sprinkler fabrication shop is over 24,000 square feet and capable of fabricating any type of fire protection system.

Employees have to work in unusual marine environments and unusual hours. The average offshore day is 12 hours, and the average offshore stay is 3 to 4 days per trip. Our foreign assignments average 6 to 8 days. Over time is paid for any work or travel after 40 hours. The average hours spent working and traveling is 50 to 70 hours per week.

On a regular basis, our marine technicians can be traveling offshore by a boat to a drillship, on a helicopter to a production platform or traveling overseas. The opportunities are vast for someone with this type of experience.

GWSS will only employee technicians that will train to become proficient in all areas of fire protection. Our marine fire service technicians inspect, test, certify and provide detailed documentation on the following fire systems and equipment.

  • Fire alarm systems-program panels, check sensitivity, etc.
  • fire suppression systems-FM200, CO2, halon, water mist, dry and wet chemical, AFFF foam systems, etc.
  • sprinkler and deluge systems, wet and dry systems, pre action systems
  • fire extinguishers-portables, wheeled units, etc.
  • fire hoses and stations
  • 30 minute breathing air and cascade systems
  • gas detection systems-portable and fixed-combustible and toxic
  • fireman's lockers
  • lifeboat/survival craft weight test and inspections

This type of employment is not meant for the average person. GWSS offers an ever changing environment. This employment opportunity is not for anyone that wants their office in the same cubicle and spends their work days studying, certifying plans and review of codes without first gaining field experience. It is not meant for some one that is looking to punch a time clock and travel past a security guard, through the same chain link fence, for work each day. GWSS is seeking personnel that not only can quote codes, but more importantly will become proficient in designing, installation , troubleshooting of systems and able to work with their hands. GWSS technicians are not allowed to get complacent in only one area of fire protection.

Most of our competitors technicians are residential/commercial based alarm/security technicians and find it difficult to excel in our line of work. Their technicians want the easier tasks of riding around in city traffic making service calls, troubleshooting, and inspecting small systems ( 8 to 5'ers-only survivors, not thrivers). These technicians are usually not suppression trained.

Our field service technicians have proven to be our best sales people. Field technicians become the best sales representatives that any company can have in most any industry. This is the one point that most other companies seem to be missing. Especially if the service technician can relate to the potential customer and show the customer how he came up with his calculations, reasons and the methods used. After all it is not rocket science, as some companies would have you believe.

GWSS has found it best to employee technical school graduates that are mechanical minded and have a strong electrical or computer background. These candidates are rare indeed. GWSS offers a "hands on" service position that offers "on the job training" to those that demonstrate and prove endurance and are goal oriented by completing a technical college or fire protection course.

This will allow GWSS to mold a successful candidate into an experienced fire protection engineer that is able to work with any type of manufactures fire alarm, fire detection, fire suppression, fire sprinkler, and security systems anywhere in the world. This is due to their vast exposure of both foreign and domestic fire systems, methods and various international regulations and standards. GWSS offers sales, engineering, design, estimates, and installation of any type of fire protection system. We have a Caribbean office that services the world’s largest chemical/petroleum refinery plant and the rest of the Caribbean. This includes Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, and several other Caribbean islands.

We are truly a full service fire protection company. GWSS has a high pressure D.O.T certified shop. Our fire system shop can service all cylinders, foreign or domestic, hydrotest any type and size of cylinder, including breathing air. All valves are repaired "in house". Due to our expertise and capabilities with all type of gasses, agents and vast assortment of foreign adaptors, we regularly supply our services to competitors.

If this employment opportunity interests you and you have experience and/or training in this field please contact gws@gulfwidesafety.com
